No matter how great your video is, it probably can’t be used across all channels in its original format. Different platforms have different requirements for video uploads in terms of maximum file size and aspect ratio.

In order to get your video seen by as many people as possible, we have put together this guide on how to resize videos and why you need to do it.

Why do you need to resize your videos?

You may need to resize your video to upload it to certain platforms or so that it runs smoothly when it is played back. File sizes that are too large can result in slow playback and can take up valuable bandwidth, whereas small files will have a poor image quality.

You usually change the file size of a video by compressing it, but there are other options. Changing the aspect ratio can make a video appropriate for certain platforms while reducing the size at the same time.

For example, Facebook feed videos have a recommended size of 1280 x720 pixels with a maximum file size of 4GB, but Instagram in-feed videos work best with square videos with a resolution of 1080 x 1080 pixels, and videos posted on Vimeo can be posted with the highest quality export settings.

Ways to resize

Exporting

The easiest way to create a version of your video in your desired size is during the export process after you have completed editing your video. Rather than exporting using default settings, or the highest quality settings, you may be able to export it straight into your desired file size or aspect ratio. Exporting the video as a different file type may also result in a smaller file.

If you do not have the video in its pre-export state, and only have the completed video, then you will need to download resizing software or an application first, such as Adobe Premiere Pro.

Compression

In most situations, compressing the video file is the best way to resize it. A compression algorithm reduces the number of bits required to make up each frame. Again, this process will require a specific program to make the file smaller while retaining the video quality.

Cropping

Another way to resize a video is by cropping it using a program such as iMovie. There are also built-in programs on iPhones and Androids. This method cuts out any unwanted pixels from the frame, resulting in a smaller file size.

Resizing by aspect ratio

As mentioned earlier, some platforms will require you to use a specific aspect ratio for your video. Through the process of changing a video’s aspect ratio, the file size will often be reduced at the same time. Again, this will require a specific program for the conversion.

There are a few ways you can resize a video, but the method you choose depends on the software at your disposal and your reason for resizing. In order to share your videos across as many possible channels as possible, you will want to have copies in a few different sizes. If you need any help with editing your videos, you are welcome to get in touch with us.
