I started Sharp Films straight out of university in July 2014, starting from scratch is a real challenge, and you soon realise that the road ahead could get a bit bumpy, which it did.  Year on year my business grew, so did the list of equipment required to do a great job for my clients.  I love my work, the people I meet, the places I travel too and the achievements made and I feel that this show’s in my work. 2017 has turned out to be the best year yet with some really interesting, unique and creative jobs. I have had a lot of repeat business from some of my dedicated clients that love the work I create for them. Also, I have worked with many new clients throughout 2017 which have all been extremely happy with the service we provided. Everything has stepped a notch throughout the year. The Kit, The style and the knowledge has all good bigger and better which means I can keep up the high standard of work that makes Sharp Films stand out from the rest. 2018 is looking like its going to be even more epic, with lots of big plans and exciting shoots in the pipeline. During 2017 I had the pleasure of  meeting and working with lots of fantastic talented people who produce, or are involved with, an array of services, products or activities.  The list is growing, so is the diversity of work, involving the tough extremes of Downhill Biking, to working with Virgin Atlantic, or filming the Exeter Food Festival. It’s not just my own projects I work on, I also work as a second camera operator along with talented Steven Brooks,  on high end productions for a variety of Blue Chip companies. We have a special relationship with our clients. I am taken back by some of the unique ideas that some people turn into really interesting businesses, like a mobile cocktail bar, or exquisite handmade shoes, or a personalised range of outdoor clothing.  The special relationship with our clients extends to consultation, suggestions and recommendation aimed to help boost their presents on the internet. I am really looking forward to seeing what 2018 has to offer and if it was anything like 2017, I cant wait!

We invested heavily into new kit in 2017 and intend keeping this investment going into the latest tech throughout 2018. It’s important to keep up to date with the latest kit as technology is moving so fast, you can soon be left behind. We added new Camera’s, Gimbals, Lens’, Editing Equipment and much more to the fleet last year. This means that we can be creating the best work possible as we aren’t restricted by the tech. The Cornish Fasty // Extreme Video Production Exeter 

Trying to keep up with Jay Williams isn’t the easiest of tasks…. a single Sharp Films Videographer to keep up with all the activity.  Gawton Gravity Hub, One of the best downhill mountain bike trails in the south west, and where all the action took place.  The weather also added to the challenge, misty to start, light drizzle and then dry, great considering everything had to be shot on foot, not easy when you have to run to keep up, carrying a lot of equipment.  Filming and Editing South West

This action packed Sharp Film was one of our most challenging  assignments, I decided, because of the location and type of terrain, that one camera closer to the action, would add to the actual feel of the shoot.  Almost as soon as it all began I was beginning to doubt my decision, the physical effort required just keeping up with Jay was extremely demanding, but working with him was fantastic, his experience with other film crews helped as we setup positions for jumps and other complicated shots.  Overall the shoot went extremely well, although very exhausting. The kit used was kept to the minimum, a Sony A7Sii & FS5 and Movi M5 Gimbal.

Jay Williamson Downhill // Videographer & Editor Devon

Sharp Films, proud to work with Jay who is 24 years of age, lives in Cornwall, and has competed at the Downhill World cup series, finishing 7th Elite in the British overall Downhill series.  He is currently riding for the Steve Peat Syndicate, Santa Cruz Bicycles, Royal racing, 7th protection and Horizon watches.  Local riding spots are, Woodys Bike Park, Cornwall, and Gawton Gravity Hub, Devon. Jay is a fine example to his profession, through hard work and determination, he has achieved much, but his real reward is the self satisfaction for those achievements and this is just the beginning of his success! Over the last few months we’ve been working on updating the look for the Sharp Films brand. Its always been really important for our branding to match up to our work. We wanted to create a new bold, unique and easy to read logo that says exactly what It does on the tin. The website has had some updates over the last few weeks as well; all of the updated branding and photos being added onto the website so everything matches up. Like our logo, we want our website to be a platform to show you what Sharp Films is really about! With our new look website you are instantly hit with visuals that give you a really good indication of our style and creative flair.

Professional Video Services Exeter | Promotional Films Devon

John Gandy’s in Exeter is one of the most popular and when known bars In Exeter. Chris who Manages John Gandy’s and also The Waterfront down by the Quay got in contact about creating a promotional film for the bar to show off its updated look. The idea of the film was to show all area’s of John Gandys! It is well known for being one of the best sports bars in Exeter but people may not know that it has a fantastic cocktail bar upstairs named Spirit and also has some great bands playing there. The aim of the video was to promote all the sides to the bar and generally show the brilliant atmosphere and what makes it so unique. The shoot was broken up into two separate nights. The first part of the shoot we got a lot of the close up shots of the cocktails being created and drinks poured. On the second night of filming is where we got the most of our footage! John Gandys had a fantastic band playing on the stage and it really filled the bar and made the atmosphere incredible. Its so much easier shooting a promotional film like this when you can see that everyone is genuinely having a great time! It was a little snug at times and making sure that beer wasn’t getting thrown over the camera was at the top my head. Check out the John Gandy’s promotional film below:

John Gandy’s put there promotional video on its Facebook page to initially advertise the bar and its engagement and viewing figures are very impressive. It has been viewed more than 12,000 times and has lots of great comments and reactions. This is a great example of when social media and good video content works extremely well together. SunGift approached Sharp Films about creating a Testimonial film that would explain their services and show of  their products. Their main aim of the film was to explain to potential clients the advantages of using LED lighting in schools and other business’s. Video Production Devon

I wanted to create a very simple explanation of how the process works start to finish to create a promotional film. This process is pretty much the same for every project that is taken on; obviously the size of the project will determine how long it takes to do each stage from planning through to completion. One of the biggest and most important aims of Sharp Films is for the client to have trust in us. When a new project is starting I go through this simple process so that you know exactly what happens and when.

Plan it

I will come and meet with you or talk on the phone about your project idea or brief. This is also a time for me to understand more about your business or product. This is important so that I can make any recommendations to how the film could work. Often I am able to bounce different idea’s around that you might not of thought of and adapt the idea to be more engaging or creative. Once I understand the brief and your business I can go away and create a general plan for the shoot.

The Shoot

This is when I can get all the toys out! I shoot on some of the most up to date videography equipment available and if needed have a further production team I can bring in to assist on the shoot. Having a solid brief is always very important at this stage. Having the time to be creative is even more important tho. Often taking a step back and just shooting what works is best thing you can do ! You can capture some of those special moments or intricate details that take your film up a notch.

The Edit

The edit is my favourite part of the whole process. This is where I get to put together the creation and make the vision a reality. I use a professional and high quality edit suite powered by Apple Macs. The footage firstly gets logged in order of appearance. Then the soundtrack is added, colour is graded and then a final tighten. I then watch through to make sure I am 100% happy with the edit. The client will then be able to review the edit and I can make any further changes needed.

Event Video Production Exeter:

Edge Watersport’s is an extreme sports company based in Exmouth. They run a Stand up paddle boarding race every year called “The Exe Hammer”. I was approached by Edge water-sports to cover the event to show and unique and fun it really is. Of course we jumped at the opportunity of spending a day shooting this brilliant little event and off we went!  

The Event :

“This 12km Stand Up paddleboard race/regatta is taking a different route for 2016 with the participants paddling from Topsham back to Exmouth as opposed to the other way round in previous years. This change of direction will enable a much easier start at the Topsham quay which will be great for spectating. The post event party is set to take place at The Beach house which provides an amazing venue for a few beers and some after race banter!” –  (http://www.edgewatersports.com/exe-hammer)  

The Shoot :

The forecast for the event was looking a little iffy but even the strong winds didn’t put anyone off! I started to shoot everyone getting themselves prepared and briefed for the race ahead. This is one of the key moments to shoot at any event! Trying to capture the excitement, atmosphere and maybe even a little nerves. The media speed boat turned up, we jumped in and the race was on! It was a tricky event to film as trying to get a steady shot on a boat is always a challenge, I also had it in mind that I wanted to capture as many people as possible from novice’s right up to the pro’s. Paul Simmons really smashed it this year and won by  a mile, this meant that we had to race onto dry land to shoot him coming onto the beach and logging his time. As people started coming over the line the atmosphere really warmed up and it was easy to capture people smiling and having a great time. The beers and food then came out and it was a perfect end to a great event and shoot.  

The Film:

Capturing an event like this is always a pleasure to do. Filming people when they are having a great time laughing and smiling makes putting an event film together so much easier. Its all about showing the event off in the best possible light. Exe Hammer 2016 was a joy to shoot and we hope that we can go back next year and do it all again. This is the third year that the Deep Water Soloing has been held at Exeter and 2016 did not disappoint. Sharp films were asked to cover the event with the basic brief of “make it look as awesome as it is”. Challenge accepted and we headed down to the Quay Climbing Centre where the event was being held. It was a fantastic event with a great turnout of spectators and competitors. Here is a little bit more info about what DWS is all about :

Whats it all about ?

 

 “The Quay is home to Deep Water Solo Exeter – the most unique climbing event in the UK climbing calendar!  This year the competition returns for another 3 days of seriously high quality climbing and a great fun day on Bank Holiday Monday (where anyone can enjoy the thrill of falling off a wall into water!).  Once again the routes will be set by the amazing team behind Blokfest.  Mike Langley, Gaz Parry, Gav Symonds and Ben West can once again be expected to work their magic, challenge all our competitors and keep a few surprises up their sleeves. Last year’s ‘hanging ball’ and new ‘jump to the bell’ feature in the final kept competitors and spectators on the edge of their seats.  The standard of climbing was really high and the finals were closely fought. The competitors tackling the new speed climb and the most unusual dyno feature seen yet!”

The Shoot

It was a challenging shoot as I wanted to try and get some different angles that hadn’t been shot before. With the added danger of the water it was tricky to get exactly what I wanted but pushed as hard as possible. The weather, Like most of the time in the UK was very unpredictable and was sunny one moment and then hammering with rain the next. British people, being British people got there brolly’s out and kept cheering along. This really came out well in the film and showed the good spirit of the event. This was one of the first times the new camera, the Sony A7sii was used. it was a really good test to see what the camera was capable of; I extremely impressed with how well it handled the different light situations and  love the camera more every time I use it.

The Video

As well as creating promotional films Sharp Films specialises in covering Events. The Quay Climbing Centre loved the film that we created for them.
